Questions & Answers

What are PV panels?

Photovoltaic (PV) solar panels convert sunlight directly into energy. It does this in cells that use a semiconductor produced from silicon. Silicon is most commonly found in sand and is the second most plentiful raw material on the planet.

Will I need planning permission to have solar panels?

In most cases in the UK you won't need to have planning permission if you intend to locate them on your roof and they are below a certain size. However, if you live in a conservation area, own a listed building or plan to locate them elsewhere on your property you may need to apply for planning permission. We are happy to advise you during our free site survey and help you complete any necessary paperwork.

Can PV panels be used on any type of roof?

PV panels can be fitted to tiled, slate, tin, fibre cement and box tiles. However, certain restrictions may be applied where asbestos is present.

We offer a wide range of panels to fit all sizes of domestic and commercial properties. We will undertake a complimentary site survey and advise you on the most appropriate panel size and layout for your roof. Click here to request a call back to >>> to discuss your roof type.

Can solar panels be fitted to places other than roofs?

Solar panels can also be fitted to walls and other structures and planning permission is usually required for these. However, do call us to discuss your potential locations and we will be happy to advise you on their suitability.

How much electricity will PV panels produce?

Typical installations generate approximately 40% of a household's energy. The exact amount depends on where in the UK you live and the location of your solar panels and the direction they face. So a north facing panel in Scotland will produce less than a south facing one in Cornwall... however, our consultant will give you an estimate as part of our free site survey.

Can I earn money by selling back electricity to the national grid?

When your system produces more electricity than you need, you can automatically sell this to the national grid. We'll get you connected to your distribution network operator (local electricity board) and fit the correct meters so you know how much energy you are generating and how much is being exported to your electricity board. Energy suppliers have to make regular payments to householders and communities who generate their own electricity from renewable or low carbon sources (including solar panels) under the feed-in tariffs scheme.

How much money will I save by installing solar panels?

The amount of money you will save depends upon the amount and size of panels you install, the position they are in and the amount of sunlight. In our free site survey, we will give you an estimate of the energy you will be able to save.

Are the PV solar panels covered by a guarantee?

Typically, solar panel manufacturers' performance warranties on modern solar PV modules last up to 25 years on performance - 90% of original performance after 10 years and 80% after 25 years.

How much do solar panels cost?

The cost of solar panels varies depending on their size and ability to generate electricity from sunlight. Please click here to see a table as a guide.

During our free site survey, we will explain all the packages available and the suitability for your property and location.

What is a 'Feed-in-tariff?'

Feed-In Tariffs (also known as FITs) were introduced by the Government to help increase renewable energy in the UK. It is a scheme that pays people for creating their own "clean, green electricity".

The Feed-In Tariffs are based on the electricity generated by your Solar Photovoltaic system which is used in the property. There is also an additional payment for any unused energy produced which is exported back to your electricity provider. This means you get paid more for the energy you don't use than for that which you do which encourages energy efficiency.

FITs are for everyone, including households, landlords, businesses and even organisations such as schools and care homes.

What do your prices include?

  • PV panels
  • Scaffolding if required.
  • Removal of the existing roof and other roofing works.
  • Any internal work to install wiring.
  • Connection agreement with the Distribution Network Operator (DNO).
  • Electrical connection work by fully qualified electricians
  • A generation meter
  • Other display meters if required e.g. an export meter or hand-held display meter

Are PV panel prices subject to VAT?

PV panels are subject to VAT. However homeowners pay a reduced rate of 5% for their panels.

What happens in a power cut?

There is a safety mechanism in all our domestic solar panels that automatically switches their connection to the national grid during a power cut. This is to stop electricity entering the national grid and potentially hurting people working to restore power to the neighbourhood.

If grid related power cuts are common in your house you may want to consider installing back-up storage to make the most of all the electricity you generate. Please ask us for more details.

How much maintenance will the panels need?

Most PV panels need very little maintenance, except making sure they are cleaned occasionally and ensuring trees do not overhang them. We will leave you written details of any maintenance checks you need to carry out from time to time to ensure everything is working properly. These include details of the main inverter fault signals and key trouble-shooting guidance. We wil go through these when we complete your installation.

In areas that experience high levels of dust and grime such as city or industrial locations your solar PV array may need additional cleaning from time to time as rainfall may not be sufficient. However, we will advise you in our pre-sale consultation if we believe this will be the case.

The amount of money you save is dependent on the amount of electricity that you generate from your solar PV system. The feed in tariff is a means that generators will be paid the fit rate for the total generation but will also be able to sell any energy they export back to the grid. Customers on the fit scheme will receive a guaranteed payment of 3p/KWh that they export back. The tables below provide examples of the savings that you could make by installing solar PV.
